Description

Asylum may be granted to individuals who flee persecution in their home country and provides individuals with lawful status in the U.S. that can lead to citizenship. In affirmative asylum cases (when the applicant is not in removal proceedings) the volunteer attorney prepares an application for asylum, which is filed with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The application package generally includes: (1) a government form that explains the applicant’s personal history; (2) the applicant’s affidavit describing the reasons the applicant fears persecution; (3) a legal memorandum in letter form that describes the applicant’s eligibility for asylum; (4) other corroborating affidavits and evidence; and (5) applicable country condition evidence.

After filing the application, the attorney represents the client at a non-adversarial interview before the Chicago Asylum Office.

Required 3 hr. training held quarterly.
